The use of copper inserts in steel collector bars has proven to be an efficient way of improving the production process. In an ideal aluminium electrolysis process, producing 1 MT of aluminium (with 100% efficiency) requires 12980 KWH of energy. However, in reality, a current efficiency of 95–96% is observed. Introduction of The copper insert significantly reduced DC power reduction. Copper is increasingly being used in the cathodes of aluminium reduction cells. The impact on cell productivity and specific energy consumption may be significant. Moreover, cell life and recycling may be improved when compared to the traditional collector bar design.
